What to see:
Greenwich is one of London's oldest neighbourhoods, beautifully set next to the River Thames in southeast London. Once the site of a Tudor palace (where Henry VIII was born), part of the former royal hunting ground has been preserved in Greenwich Park, a beautiful green expanse which is home to a herd of deer. The palace was later abandoned, and the elegant late 17th-century Greenwich Hospital, designed by Christopher Wren, was constructed in its place, and is now the fascinating Maritime Museum. The name 'Greenwich' has been made world-famous thanks to 'Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)', a 19th-century time system still in use which is based on the Prime Median which passes through the town. The Millennium Dome, now called the O2 Arena, is also located in Greenwich.

Local vibe:
Greenwich retains a delightful villagey feel, thanks to its cobbled streets and pretty cottages. It's got an atmospheric market, and plenty of great pubs and restaurants.

Practicalities:
Greenwich is well served by public transport. The Jubilee line stops at Northern Greenwich, near the O2 Arena, which is a short shuttle bus ride from the centre of the town. There are overland train services from central London, and Greenwich is also on the Docklands Light Railway network. There is also an extensive network of bus services.
